All about the Smart EQ forfour
No longer available
This electric vehicle is no longer in production and not available to buy new. The Smart EQ forfour was available from April 2018 until September 2019. Financial data like price, leasing and company car tax were applicable to the final year of availability of the Smart EQ forfour.
A new model of the Smart EQ forfour (2018) is available: Smart EQ forfour (2020).
Pricing
The Smart EQ forfour had a Recommend Retail Price (RRP) of £21,335 and an On The Road Price (OTR) of £21,690. The OTR Price includes VAT, first year of VED, vehicle first registration fee, number plates and delivery. The Smart EQ forfour was eligible for a Plug-In Car Grant (PICG) of £3,500. The OTR Price including the PICG for the Smart EQ forfour is £18,190.
Drivetrain and Performance
The Smart EQ forfour is a full electric vehicle (BEV). The maximum power of the Smart EQ forfour is 60 kW (80 hp). The maximum torque is 118 lb-ft. The Smart EQ forfour is rear wheel drive and can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 12.7 seconds. The top speed is 81 mph.
Battery and Charging
The battery of the Smart EQ forfour has a total capacity of 17.6 kWh. The usable capacity is 16.7 kWh (estimate). A range of about 55 miles is achievable on a fully charged battery. The actual range will however depend on several factors including climate, terrain, use of climate control systems and driving style.
For example: sustaining high speeds in cold weather could result in a range of around 35 mi. However, driving at low speeds in mild weather will increase the range to around 85 mi.
Charging is done using a Type 2 connector and the on-board charger has a maximum power of 7 kW. This charges a fully depleted battery back to full in around 3 hours. An optional on-board charger with a maximum power of 22.0 kW is available. This charges a fully depleted battery back to full in around 55 minutes. Charging the car using a regular wall plug will take around 8 hours 45 minutes.
Rapid charging is not possible.
Energy Consumption
The combined (motorway and city) energy consumption of the Smart EQ forfour is about 300 Wh per mile. By comparison, this energy consumption is the equivalent of a fuel consumption of 133 mpg in a traditional petrol car.
The actual energy consumption will depend on several factors including climate, terrain, use of climate control systems and driving style. For example: sustaining high speeds in cold weather could result in an energy use of around 475 Wh per mile. However, driving at low speeds in mild weather will increase the efficiency to about 195 Wh per mile.
CO2 Emission
The Smart EQ forfour emits no CO2 during driving. This only includes direct emissions from the vehicle itself. The energy needed to charge the battery might have been (partly) generated by the use of fossil fuels. Vehicles with an internal combustion engine will always emit CO2 during driving. Additionally, CO2 is emitted during the production and transport of fossil fuels.
Preceding model
The model shown on this page is the successor of the Smart ForFour Electric Drive, which was available from March 2017 until April 2018.
The previous model was £275 less expensive, had similar range, same acceleration and was similar in energy consumption.
